Amblyopia, or “lazy eye,” is a reduction in the visual acuity of one eye due to its insufficient use. The answer to the question, “What is amblyopia?” can be summarized as the brain ignoring one eye after perceiving a difference between the images coming from each eye. If not detected and treated at an early age, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

Up to What Age Can It Be Treated?

Treatment for amblyopia generally yields the most effective results between the ages of 7 and 10. However, treatment for amblyopia in adults is also possible with digital therapies.

Amblyopia is a condition that can be largely corrected with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Regular eye examinations for children are of vital importance for the early detection and treatment of this condition. It is recommended that parents carefully monitor their children’s visual behaviors and contact a specialist ophthalmologist in case of any suspicion.

Symptoms of Amblyopia

The symptoms of amblyopia are often noticed at an early age. Behaviors in children such as frequent blinking, tilting the head to see an object, or squinting one eye can be signs of amblyopia. Additionally, poor depth perception and the eyes not moving together in alignment are among the common symptoms. The signs of amblyopia are generally noticed at an early age:

  • Looking with one eye or squinting: Children, in particular, show a tendency to use one eye.
  • Misalignment of the eyes (Strabismus): The inability of the eyes to move in parallel is a common sign.
  • Difficulty focusing: Blurry vision when looking at distant or near objects.
  • Discomfort when one eye is covered: A feeling of unease arises when the amblyopic (“lazy”) eye is covered.
  • Balance problems: A loss of coordination may be seen due to visual disparity.

Lazy Eye Amblyopia

What Causes Lazy Eye?

Causes of lazy eye include strabismus, refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), congenital cataracts, and ptosis. These conditions, which affect the ability of the eyes to work together, especially in childhood, cause one eye to be used less than the other and become lazy.

  • Strabismus: Misalignment of the eyes causes the brain to neglect one eye.
  • Refractive Errors: Problems such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism can cause amblyopia.
  • Cataracts: Cloudiness in the lens of the eye reduces the visual signal.
  • Amblyopia without Anopsia: Laziness that occurs without an organic cause.

Lazy Eye in Adults

Lazy eye in adultsLazy eye diagnosed in adulthood is more difficult to treat, and full recovery is often not possible. However, in some cases, partial vision improvements can be achieved with special exercises and therapies.

Lazy Eye in Children

Lazy eye in children occurs in childhood and responds well to treatment if diagnosed early. Children should have regular eye examinations, especially between 6 months and 1 year of age, and at 3 and 6 years of age. This allows for early detection and treatment of amblyopia.

Treatment of Amblyopia

The treatment for amblyopia aims to improve vision by increasing the use of the weaker eye. The most common method is forcing the amblyopic eye to work by covering the stronger eye. This occlusion therapy (patching) is applied for varying durations depending on the child’s age and the severity of the amblyopia. Additionally, supplementary treatments such as the use of eyeglasses, strabismus surgery, or cataract surgery may be necessary to eliminate the underlying cause.

Exercises (Vision Therapy)

Amblyopia exercises are special applications developed to strengthen brain-eye coordination. In children especially, these exercises stop the progression of amblyopia and increase visual acuity by actively using the eye muscles. Although amblyopia exercises in adults show effects over a longer term, positive results can be obtained in cases of amblyopia from disuse. In response to the question “How are amblyopia exercises performed?”, experts recommend digital vision games, color differentiation activities, and contrast-enhancing applications. Unless supported by laser treatment or surgery for the underlying cause, the regular performance of exercises increases the success of the treatment.

  • Use of an eye patch: Covering the stronger eye for specific periods encourages the amblyopic eye to be used more actively.
  • Digital therapies and eye exercise applications: The aim is to stimulate the amblyopic eye through special computer programs or mobile applications.
  • Near-distance focusing games: Activities such as reading, writing, or solving puzzles support the functioning of the amblyopic eye.

Amblyopia Surgery

Amblyopia surgery aims to correct the underlying causes, such as strabismus and congenital cataracts, through surgical intervention. This procedure, especially in cases of strabismus-related amblyopia, helps the brain to process signals from both eyes equally by aligning the eye muscles. In amblyopia caused by a cataract, the opacity in the ocular lens is cleared to allow visual stimuli to reach the retina. After surgery, the treatment must be supported by amblyopia exercises, the use of an eye patch, and digital therapies. Although the results of amblyopia surgery in adults may be limited, successful outcomes can be achieved in cases of amblyopia from disuse with additional treatment methods.

Home Treatment

Home treatment for amblyopia requires a regular and disciplined approach. Primarily, the weaker eye is made to work by covering the stronger eye as recommended by the ophthalmologist. During this process, digital games and television programs specially designed for children encourage the active use of the amblyopic eye. In particular, dynamic and colorful content contributes to the treatment process by increasing visual stimulation. Furthermore, the consumption of foods rich in Vitamin A and lutein supports overall eye health, positively affecting the treatment. It should not be forgotten that these methods applied at home play an important role in the treatment of amblyopia and require regular follow-up.

  • Use of an eye patch: Must be applied regularly as recommended by the doctor.
  • Digital games: Visual skill development games designed especially for children can be beneficial.
  • Nutrition that supports eye health: The consumption of foods rich in Vitamin A and lutein supports general eye health.
